Why Viminacium is special
Viminacium was one of the largest Roman cities in the Balkans — a legionary capital of some 40,000 people, with an amphitheatre, baths and a mint of its own. Its frescoed mausoleum is a rare survival, and the site's other headline find, the mammoth Vika, makes for one of the more unusual pairings in European archaeology: a Roman capital and an Ice Age giant on the same ground.
The practicalities of the day
Viminacium sits 90 minutes to two hours east of Belgrade near Kostolac. There's no simple public-transport route for visitors, so a guided day trip is the standard way to go — most bundle it with Golubac Fortress and a boat ride through the Iron Gate gorge.
Go for the whole Danube circuit
The best-reviewed tours don't stop at Viminacium alone — they combine it with the dramatic Iron Gate gorge and Golubac Fortress, sometimes a rakija tasting too, making for a fuller and more memorable day than a single-site visit.
Come prepared, and see the mammoth
Wear sturdy shoes for open, uneven ground and bring sun protection. Don't leave without seeing Vika the mammoth — her shelter sits a short walk from the main Roman ruins and is easy to miss if you don't ask.
